Earth Day 2021
Today, April 22nd 2021, marks International Earth Day, an initiative formed in 1970 with the mission to diversify, educate and activate the environmental movement worldwide [EARTHDAY.org]. Promoting both collaborative action and advocating the power of the individual, Earth Day encourages all of us to reflect upon our impact on the planet and consider how we can transition to a more sustainable, low carbon world. In a year that has seen the reintroduction of the United States to the Paris Agreement, and will later witness the UK host COP26 in October, there has never been a better time to support and celebrate Earth Day at JDX, and recognise the global movement to build a greener and cleaner world!
As stressed by the UN Environment Programme, it is essential “to improve parts of the financial system” to effectively facilitate “the transition to an inclusive, green economy” [UNEP Inquiry Report, “The Financial System We Need”]. The financial sector is rapidly adapting to a more sustainable way of practice through both ‘Financing Green’ (increasing flows of finance to support green and sustainable development objectives), and also ‘Greening Finance’ (integrating sustainability within financial institutions strategies and activities). Alongside these macro changes we also see a push for green in the everyday, including encouraging employees to cycle or walk to work, recycling in the workplace and reducing single-use plastic.
In line with this year’s Earth Day theme, ‘Restore the Earth’, JDX’s Go Green Society will present a Grow Green event on 10th May. Our JDXers will have a chance to learn more about growing their own fruits/herbs/veggies at home! We will send pots, compost, seeds, and have a live plant along with Pot Gang, who will teach us how to successfully care for our plants. Take a look at available resources today to find out more about what you can do to help restore the Earth – we are all responsible for a brighter future!
