ISO 20022 | Cross-border messaging

CONTEXT

The payments ecosystem continues to rapidly change and evolve. This is being driven by increasing pressure from regulators, intense competition from new entrants and by customers who now expect payments to be instant, frictionless and account-to-account.

ISO 20022 will provide consistent, rich and structured data across the payments chain. The drive to adopt ISO 20022 standards for payment messaging requires financial institutions to consider their transition programme as part of their strategic outlook, and how they can enhance their existing processes and technology for commercial benefit.

JDX were engaged by a tier-1 investment bank to provide capacity to support the set-up and management of the client’s existing global ISO 20022 Programme, with particular focus on cross-border (CBPR+) messaging formats.

APPROACH

JDX provided SME oversight and deployed Programme Management and cPMO resources to provide capacity to the team responsible for overseeing the firmwide ISO 20022 workstreams.

As JDX were engaged post an initial internal gap-analysis and scoping effort, the approach to establishing programme management of the ISO 20022 transition would consist of multiple aspects:

  • Engagement – identifying key stakeholders across the business and establishing effective steering committees and working groups
  • Ratification – validating the accuracy and completeness of the scope determined and engaging the relevant system owners from across the business
  • Governance – creating a centralised hub for management of the change programmes in flight at a divisional level and introducing necessary controls such as project charters, measurable timelines, and accountability matrices.  
  • Testing – designing and implementing a uniform testing strategy to ensure consistency across all divisional change management workstreams

By leveraging our experience in delivery of firmwide regulatory programmes and  in-depth knowledge of ISO 20022, as well as unique insight into the new cross border messaging, JDX were well positioned to support the client.  

OUTCOME

The ongoing engagement represents a multi-year transition for the industry in which JDX will support the client in establishing and managing their ISO 20022 Programme.  

Whilst the ultimate objective of the Programme is to ensure day-1 compliance for ISO 20022 in November 2022, as part of our partnership with the client, JDX consultants have been engaged to:

  • Provide SME assistance and senior change management support for the set-up of the internal ISO programme
    • Support the definition of a clear implementation roadmap covering Technology, Data Standards and Client Adoption workstreams
    • Support the design, specification development and delivery of requirements for the transition to ISO 20022.
